Hyatt Hotels: Kissel Uptown Oakland Debuts to Celebrate the City’s Past and Future

CHICAGO (MARCH 2, 2022) – Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) announced the launch of Kissel Uptown Oakland in the center of the city’s vibrant and eclectic arts and entertainment district, joining The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand. The seven-story, 168-room hotel seamlessly blends historic references and art deco elements with contemporary design and introduces three new dining experiences for guests and locals. The dynamic property, which also includes 74 residences, is owned by Signature Development Group and Jordan Real Estate Investments and managed by Evolution Hospitality.

Sharing its namesake with the original showroom, Pacific Kissel Kar-Dean Lippi Showroom, formerly called 2401-11 Broadway, Kissel is a tribute to the automotive industry and the blue-collar spirit that helped to make Oakland a prosperous metropolitan center. Today, that spirit lives on, with Kissel presenting itself as a modern showcase of all that makes Oakland so unique.

“Kissel Uptown Oakland captures the spirit and history of the city’s past while celebrating the thriving Oakland of today,” said John “JR” Reynolds, general manager of Kissel Uptown Oakland. “We are thrilled to bring a hotel worthy of history to the market where our guests can explore and enjoy all that our local community has to offer, and, at the same time, provide an attractive new destination for locals.”

BAR Architects’ design of this unique property seamlessly integrates the historic 1910s Beaux-Arts facade originally created by renowned Bay Area architect Frederick H. Meyer. Designed to embrace the history and spirit of the neighborhood, the architecture includes a contemporary marquee, locally commissioned artwork, elevated decor, and high-rise windows that provide abundant natural light. The interior of the lobby emphasizes vertical space, incorporating elements of the neighborhood’s signature art deco architecture, while the exterior features architectural glass fins with digitally printed artwork commissioned by local artist Kelly Ording that extends 70 feet above the entrance. An expansive lobby bar and cafe activates the space throughout the day and evening.

The interiors, overseen by Parisa O’Connell Interior Design, also draw inspiration from Oakland’s past, incorporating art deco elements and blending them with the industrial character of the old row of automobiles. A compelling color palette of aubergine, natural greens and blush tones, combined with natural materials used throughout, create a warm, textured and inviting atmosphere. The hotel’s wallpapers, fabrics, and decorative accents feature nostalgic prints that create a vintage feel with a modern twist.

Homey rooms and suites feature a glass chandelier, hardwood floors softened by custom-patterned carpets, and lively wallpapers juxtaposed with colorful industrial tiles.

The hotel features three distinct dining destinations, each offering a range of options coupled with impromptu and pleasantly unexpected service, synonymous with The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand.

High 5ive The rooftop bar and lounge takes its name from the exuberant act of giving someone a “high five,” a celebration inspired by Oakland A baseball player Glenn Burke. This lively rooftop bar has an outdoor terrace with panoramic views, a lounge area with fire pits, and its own street entrance independent of the hotel. A wide selection of classic drink options are available, including local craft beer, wine, and signature cocktails paired with affordable American fare. Customers can choose from a variety of unique cocktail variations such as Bulleit Rye Whisky, Cherry, Vermouth, Orange and Smoke and another, featuring JM Rum White Rum, Carpano Bianco, Vermouth, peach and hibiscus. Savory small plates that are easy to share and enjoy in a friendly lounge setting include flatbreads, salads, carnitas street tacos and peri peri chicken skewers.

by Otto, whose name is a play on the word “auto”, is a large all-day cafe and bar located in the hotel lobby. The cafe offers a modern American menu with strong Californian influences, including homemade donuts. Morning offerings range from French toast croissant sticks to a bowl of breakfast cereal, while afternoon and evening offerings include tuna poke, gourmet hot dogs and Bolognese with mushroom eggplant.

Occitania, a French-inspired restaurant by celebrity local chef Paul Canales and operations manager Rafe Gabel, is set to open later in the spring for lunch and dinner. The restaurant will be inspired by the Occitan linguistic region of southern France, stretching from the Italian region of Piedmont to Spain’s Catalonia. The menu will combine traditional technique with a modern approach, adapting age-old recipes to showcase sustainable ingredients sourced from local farmers, ranchers and fishermen, incorporating signature dishes and bursts of improvisation.

Kissel Uptown Oakland features over 10,000 square feet of dynamic meeting and event space including a mezzanine overlooking the hotel lobby and a panoramic rooftop bar and lounge. Venues include The Gold Bug, a grand ballroom with 10-foot ceilings named after Kissel’s most famous car, The Showroom, which features beautiful historic arched floor-to-ceiling windows, and High 5ive, the rooftop bar and a living room with a terrace overlooking the heart of downtown Oakland. Kissel Uptown Oakland’s meeting spaces offer the most flexibility, many of which can be configured into smaller rooms for more intimate gatherings.
