HOTELS in Spain are offering great deals this summer as tourist numbers begin to dwindle.
According to local media, the Spanish Hotel Confederation said bookings from Britons had already “started to slow down” – despite being just weeks away from the peak summer season.
Experts said it was a combination of inflation and the current travel chaos, which has seen huge queues at airports and canceled flights.
S&P Global Economics director Paul Smith said in a report: “With elevated price pressures likely to persist at least in the near term, demand – and with this growth in activity – is likely to be negatively affected in the coming months”.
Some hotel chains are now offering deals even during the high season to attract tourists during the peak period.
Sun Online has found some of the biggest deals, including a night at PortBlue Club Pollentia Resort & Spa 4* for £166 instead of £299.
Or a night at the Petit Hotel Hostatgeria Sant Salvador is down £91 from £122.
Nor is it the only problem facing the tourism industry in Spain.
Staffing shortages mean hotels are struggling to fill up to 200,000 jobs, with many recruits lacking experience in a bid to be ready for peak season.
And Covid cases are also spiraling – Spain reported infections up fivefold in the space of a week.
Britons heading to the Canary Islands and the Costa del Sol could be forced to wear masks again if the situation continues to worsen.
Amós García Rojas, a public health official in the Canary Islands, said he could not rule out requiring a mask indoors again “to protect vulnerable people”.
And the UK government has issued new travel advice for Britons traveling to Spain this year due to a number of planned strikes across the country.
Ryanair and easyJet have planned strikes, which will cause problems at a number of airports in Spain.
The airports affected will include Madrid, Malaga, Barcelona, Alicante, Seville, Palma, Valencia, Girona, Santiago de Compostela and Ibiza.
If you can wait until September when the chaos has died down, we’ve rounded up some of the cheap deals in the Canary Islands from £28 pp a night.
